Holiday Gift Guide for Container Gardeners

Holiday Gift Guide for the Container Gardener in Your Life

  CONTAINED
BRILLIANCE

It’s December, and like many of you, my inbox is overflowing with “last chance” deals, countdown clocks, and limited-time offers.

And while I appreciate a good deal, I try not to let all the noise dictate my spending. Instead of clicking impulsively, I keep a running list of thoughtful gift ideas throughout the year – items I know will be appreciated and well-used, especially by the gardeners in my life.

Today's post is a round-up of some of my favorite tools and accessories for container gardeners. Many of them can be neatly stored in an unassuming 5-gallon bucket (one of my favorite tools!), plus a few gift ideas that go beyond the usual hardware.

If you’re looking for little help creating your list – whether for yourself or the plant lovers in your life – I hope these suggestions spark inspiration. Planning ahead makes for smarter shopping and less stress as we inch closer to the holidays.

Why Tools Matter

In any project, whether baking a cake, assembling an Ikea cabinet, or planting seasonal containers, the right tools make all the difference. Good tools save time, reduce frustration, and make the work more enjoyable.

As a professional container gardener, I rely on tools that support my body and help me work smarter. The right tools help me to move faster, lift smarter, and keep container gardening from slipping into the "chore" category. Home gardeners can use these same strategies to set themselves up for success.

My Favorite Hack

Here are a few of my go-tos that I never want to be without. Best of all, most can be stored neatly inside a 5-gallon bucket. The bucket itself becomes a tool when paired with a caddy and seat-style lid.

  • The bucket caddy has pockets to keep essentials tools like pruners, snips, and twine close at hand.
  • The seat-styled bucket lid turns the bucket into a portable seat, saving wear and tear on knees and back. I issue one to every crew member at the start of each season.

Hand Tool Favorites

Stihl PP 70 Hand Pruner

These are my favorites for trimming woody stems and removing broken branches for both aesthetics and plant health. The PP70 fits average sized hands like mine well, while the PP60 is a great alternative for smaller hands. Whatever brand you choose, prioritize sharp, rust-resistant blades and a comfortable grip.

Corona 10” Folding Pruning Saw

This compact folding saw is incredibly handy for cutting branches over one inch in diameter and slicing through dense roots and compacted soil that needs some muscle. Its non-slip handle, sharp teeth, and extra length make soil work effortless.

Corona Snips

Snips are small, sharp scissors with pointed blades designed for detailed work. They're a must for precision tasks like deadheading flowers, snipping leaves, and trimming delicate stems. The Corona version includes a simple leather strap lock to keep them closed when not in use and a brightly colored handle that makes them easy to spot in a trug or tucked into foliage.

A.M. Leonard Deluxe Hori Hori Knife

AM Leonard Deluxe Hori Hori Knife, best container gardening tools

A Hori Hori is a versatile tool for digging, fluffing soil and cutting roots. It’s narrow shape and sharp edge are perfect for reaching into tight spaces and tackling rootbound plants. Grip it like an ice pick to avoid wrist strain. The A.M Leonard version is stainless steel, lightweight, easy to sharpen, and rarely traps mud. The bright pink handle, built-in thumb rest, and extended serrated edge make it a standout.

Stihl Blower

Stihl battery operated blower, best container gardening tools

For quick clean-up, I rely on a battery-powered Stihl blower. It’s lightweight, surprisingly powerful, and much quieter and less pollutive than gas models. It's perfect for tidying up the mess and debris around containers and is much more efficient than sweeping with a broom, especially after big planting days.

Red Gorilla Gardening Trug

Garden Trug

This flexible recycled rubber trug is one of my most-used workhorses. I use it to carry tools and supplies, collect plant material and clippings, haul compost, and mix soil. It comes in a variety of colors and sizes, and it's flexible enough to bend and pour soil easily, saving time and reducing the mess that comes with using a scoop to fill containers.

Nitrile Gloves

What better gift to give than a fresh pair of gloves? Every season, our crew gets a new pair. They don’t have to be fancy to be useful. Gloves protect your hands from cuts and scrapes and also protect plants from residues like lotions or salts on the skin. I like colorful, lightweight nitrile gloves that are easy to spot if they get set down in the garden. I recommend the Showa Atlas 370 and suggest buying two pairs as backup for you or your crew, so you're covered when one pair is lost or in the wash.

A Little Tool Tip

Mark your tools, or those you're gifting, with bright duct tape so they’re less likely to go missing. A bit of fluorescent color around the handle makes them easier to spot in the garden and adds a caring touch to the gift.

A Few Non-Tool Favorites

Favorite Book Right Now

Book "Why Women Grow"

Why Women Grow by Alice Vincent is a recent read that stuck with me. It beautifully illustrates the grit and grace of tending the soil in difficult times and is a heartfelt tribute to the perseverance and tenacity of women.

Favorite Accessory

Cindy Funes modeling Linen Tales Apron

This apron from Linen Tales is as stylish as it is functional. It’s my go-to for gardening and workshops. Made from soft, stone washed linen, it has just enough pockets for a few key tools, and a pen. Mine is from Lithuania, but you can find similar versions closer to home if you prefer to shop local.

The Gift of Learning

Maybe you’ve been wanting to grow as a container gardener or have someone in your life that does. You might even have employees or crew members who could benefit from container-specific knowledge and inspiration. Just like the right tools, the right knowledge makes container gardening work smoother and more joyful.
